macOS Catalina (Updated October 21)

Catalina (macOS 10.15) officially launched last week.

As of October 14, we have identified compatibility issues in both ZBrushCore and ZBrush:

  • ZBrushCore will crash when trying to save files.  To resolve this we have replaced the installer available for download from My Licenses.  Simply reinstall ZBrushCore using that new installer.  Or you can download the update patcher.  To run this patcher, download the .dmg file and mount it.  From within that DMG file, copy the updater application into your ZBrushCore 2018.1 folder before running it from that location.  Please note that the updater requires ZBrushCore 2018.1.  It will not work with the original release of ZBrushCore.  If you have not yet upgraded to ZBrushCore 2018.1 please do so through the My Licenses page.

  • ZBrush will not successfully save over older versions of a file.  (The workaround for this would be to save with a new file name each time.)
  • When exporting a document as an image, selecting the JPG format gives a .PSD file extension.  Simply type the .jpg extension manually to override this.

In practical terms, this means that if you rely on ZBrush we DO NOT recommend upgrading to Catalina at this time.  

If you do choose to upgrade to Catalina please ensure that the option is enabled to make a Time Machine backup before installing the upgrade.  That way, if you encounter issues which are too impactful for you to tolerate, you are able to revert to macOS Mojave.  Reverting to your backup is done by booting in safe mode and then from the macOS Utilities menu choosing the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" option.

Of course, any issues should also be reported to Pixologic via a Support ticket so that we can investigate.

Once we have been able to properly resolve the issues with Mojave, we will update this News announcement on Support to let you know that it is safe to upgrade to Catalina.
